How to Water Orchids

Small rocks or pebbles and a deep dish will provide the appropriate tools to keep your orchids happy. Just fill the saucer with the pebbles. Adding water to the pebbles creates evaporation, then place the pot with the orchids on top of the rocks. Keep the water level just below the bottom of the plant pot. This creates an area of high humidity around the orchid pot that the plant will enjoy.
Although they like moisture, you must be careful when you water orchids not to overdo it. You mustn’t go by the appearance of the soil as an indication of when your orchid needs to be watered. Unlike other plant species, soil dryness is not the best way to decide when to water an orchid. The potting soil around the orchid holds moisture in, even when it looks dry to the naked eye.
Generally, try to water orchids once a week, or every other week and do not thoroughly soak the soil. Allow the plant medium to thoroughly dry out before you water it again. There are species of orchids that, in their natural environment, grow on tree branches and tree trunks. In such a habitat, it is quite usual for the roots to become completely dry before they receive any additional water.
Proper water temperature is also important to water orchids correctly. Water that is too cold or hot can cause damage to the cells in the roots. Keep your water temperature lukewarm for best results. You should be able to feel the water, and the temperature should not register as either warm or cold to your fingers.
Following a proper schedule of watering and fertilization for your orchids is the best way of ensuring that you will appreciate their alluring beauty for a long time. With occasional fertilization, the right amount of sun, proper watering, and the appropriate amount of potting soil, your will grow beautiful orchids that bloom through their blooming season.
